The Holland Hurricanes will be entering one of the most crucial weekends of the season with the hosting of two championships (one national, one regional) and several visits to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Here is everything you need to know prior to ‘Canes action this weekend.

Women’s Soccer

It’s time to crown a national women’s soccer champion at Credit Union Place in Summerside, P.E.I. beginning this week.

The Hurricanes host the 2023 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Women’s Soccer Championship in Summerside.

The ‘Canes completed a perfect 2023 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) season on Oct. 29 with a seventh championship and a 14-0-0 record combined between the regular season and playoffs.

Now, they look to turn regional success into national success and earn their first CCAA Nationals championship. Historically, the ‘Canes have made seven appearances and previously hosted the nationals in 2012.

The ‘Canes began the championship on Wednesday, defeating the Douglas College (British Columbia) Royals, 4-1. The ‘Canes are now set to face the Cégep Sainte-Foy Dynamiques (Quebec) in the National semi-final on Thursday at 5:30pm; the winner will advance to the CCAA National Championship game on Saturday at 4pm.

Tournament passes are now on sale to the public ($30 for adults, $20 for students) at the Credit Union Place box office in Summerside, and the Holland College McMillan Centre in Charlottetown at 323 Grafton Street.

For more information, updates, and live streams for the CCAA Nationals, visit www.ccaa.ca.

Women’s Rugby

While the women’s soccer Hurricanes host a national tournament this week, the women’s rugby Hurricanes host the ACAA Championship game on Sunday at 2pm at the Canada Games Alumni Field at UPEI in Charlottetown.

The ‘Canes will look to secure themselves a perfect season after a 63-0 win in semi-final action against the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies last Saturday.

After claiming silver in last year’s finals, the ‘Canes seek revenge this year as they will play the Mount Allison (MTA) Mounties. In regular season action, the ‘Canes defeated Mount Allison 27-19 on Oct. 5.

The championship game can also be seen live at www.youtube.com/@gocanesgo.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball Hurricanes remain on the road once more as they head to Mount Saint Vincent (MSVU) on Saturday and University of King’s College (UKC) on Sunday in Halifax.

The ‘Canes are coming off a win and a loss last weekend, defeating the UNB Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves 81-68 at home and losing to Mount Allison 74-64 on the road.

Amy Plaggenhoef will look to guide her team once more after scoring a combined 34 points between those two games.

The women play on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

The ‘Canes are coming off two big wins last weekend, defeating UNBSJ 96-83 at home and defeating Mount Allison 75-64 in Sackville, New Brunswick.

Diangelo Woodside will look to guide his team once more after scoring a combined 49 points between those two games. Notably, he was recently named the Hurricanes Athlete of the Week.

Women’s Volleyball

The Hurricanes volleyball season got underway this past weekend for both the men’s and women’s teams on the road.

The women’s team began their weekend with a commanding 3-0 win over the Université de Saint-Anne (USTA) Dragons in Church Point, Nova Scotia. Jenna O’Neill and Morgan White led the ‘Canes with six kills each.

The ‘Canes then traveled to Truro to play the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus (Dal AC) Rams and defeated them 3-1. White more than doubled her previous performance with an impressive 13 kills this time around.

The women’s team is back in action next weekend with more games on the road, visiting Mount Allison on Saturday, Nov. 11 (2 p.m.) and UKC on Sunday, Nov. 12 (12 p.m.).

The men’s team will get a weekend off and prepare for their home-openers on the weekend of Nov. 18-19 against UNBSJ.
